Climate Action Secretariat

Public Education and Information

  • A range of steps are being taken to ensure that information on climate action is flowing in both directions between government and British Columbians.
  • Since May 2007, the Cabinet Committee on Climate Action, chaired by the Premier, and the Climate Action Secretariat have engaged with more than 450 groups, individuals and businesses on the topic of climate action.
  • The Western Climate Initiative (WCI) is committed to including stakeholders in the development of the emissions cap and trade system. Many opportunities have already been provided, including the opportunity to comment in writing on the WCI's design options for the system.
  • Citizens' Conservation Councils will be established to help build a network for grassroots climate action across BC. These regional councils will advise government and the public in their areas on the best ways for individuals to help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contribute to climate action initiatives.
  • The Province is engaging with industry sectors to help identify the most practical GHG emissions strategies. Symposiums have been held across the province involving the forest industry, mining, oil and gas producers, waste and landfill management, agriculture, labour and transportation.
  • Youth representatives from across the province met in April 2008 to discuss how youth and government can work together to inspire BC's young people to take action on climate change issues and encourage more British Columbians to live lower-carbon lifestyles. A Youth Climate Action Leadership Alliance was announced to provide a forum for youth to engage on climate action projects.
  • BC faith leaders came together in April 2008 to discuss climate change. This summit enabled various religious communities to come together to support a low-carbon future.
