Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this Climate Change Data Catalogue being developed?
The Climate Change Data Catalogue creates access to B.C. climate change data and information to promote research and innovation. The Climate Change Data Catalogue provides a link to large amounts of climate change data already available to the public but not stored or referenced in one place. Having the data in one place makes it possible to use in different ways.

How do I use the Climate Change Data Catalogue?
Data sets are organized by category and sub-topic and then further organized by agency and file format. You can search the catalogue by clicking on each heading or you can download the document into excel or .csv format.

How frequently is the data and the catalogue updated?
Since the catalogue is a link to data from individual agencies, the originating agency is responsible for updating and maintaining their own data. The data catalogue will be updated as new data is received and as user comments are received and integrated. Agencies that have data to be included in this catalogue should add data.

What can I do if a .csv file is too large to open in a spreadsheet software program?
If the .csv file does not load into the spreadsheet software directly because it has too many rows of data, you have two options to view the file:

Option 1:
Save the .csv file to your computer. Open the file in a text editor. Highlight the desired rows of data and copy them. Open a spreadsheet software program and paste the data into a blank worksheet.
Option 2:
Save the .csv file to your hard drive. Open a database software package (such as MS-Access). Create a new table and import the .csv file.

Will the province be making personal information available?
Contributing organizations have assured that the data does not contain personal information.

How will this inform or inspire British Columbians to take action?
By publishing this data in one place, citizens and developers will have access to information that can put climate change in context for citizens. Through the Apps 4 Climate Action contest we expect interesting and dynamic applications that help describe the effects of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions, and give the public practical ideas on how they can take action.

What if a problem occurs with a data set?
If a serious problem exists with the file, please Contact Us and include the name of the data set and a description of the problem.
